Joining Forces: How Artificial Intelligence Helps the Fight Against Disinformation
Artificial intelligence (AI) is typically seen as a dangerous tool to scale up the spread of disinformation. But the reality is that in the battle against online disinformation, AI can be a powerful ally; AI technologies, such as natural language processing and machine learning algorithms, are harnessed to sift through vast amounts of digital content, swiftly identifying patterns and anomalies that might indicate misleading information. AI enables the development of proactive measures: predictive algorithms can forecast potential disinformation trends, allowing platforms and authorities to prepare targeted counter-strategies in advance. FERMI, a 3-year, 17- partner consortium supported by the Horizon Europe programme, sets out to develop tools that enable Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and society at large to prevent disinformation-induced, real-life crimes. AI tools will allow police forces to partner in FERMI to detect patterns and predict disinformation-induced real-life crimes while safeguarding users’ privacy. But how exactly can AI help? What are the risks and the benefits?
The Lisbon Council convenes the expert webinar Joining Forces: How Artificial Intelligence Helps in the Fight Against Disinformation, to highlight ways in which AI can be leveraged to monitor disinformation and prevent real life crime. Bringing together researchers, policymakers and AI experts, the webinar aims at exploring the integration of AI in FERMI and highlighting how the project ensures citizens’ privacy and safety online.
